” ‘Aml (actions) have an effect upon the heart, either of benefit, harm, or correction, before they effect the external body. The good and pure actions constitute justice for the soul whereas bad actions oppress the soul.”

Indeed, with the passing of nights and days, your stay on this earth is decreasing, yet your deeds will remain preserved and death will come suddenly. Whoever sows seeds of goodness will reap a harvest of hope. Whoever sows seeds of evil will reap the harvest of misfortune and regret. Indeed, each shall reap of that which he sows. The one who works slowly shall not be prevented from his share, and the one who works eagerly will not get more than is decreed for him (referring to worldly pursuits). Any blessing that is received is from Allah (Jala’ Wa’ala) and any protection from evil is also from Allah …

How perfect is Allah! In the soul of a man is the pride of Iblis, the jealousy of Qabil, the insolence of the people of ‘Ad, the tyranny of Thamud, the temerity of Namrud, the arrogance of Pharoah, the wrongdoing of Qarun, the trickeries of the people of Sabt, the rebelliousness of Al-Walid, the ignorance of Abu Jahl, and impudence of Haman. The soul of man also has many characteristics of beasts. He has avarice of crow, the gluttony of a dog, the display of a peacock, the filth of the hog, the malice of a camel, the predatory nature of lion, the venom of the snake, the frivolity of the ape, the greed of the ant, the deception of the fox.

I met with people who deemed the world to be less important than earth underneath their feet. One of them would own only enough sustenance to maintain his body, yet he would still say, ‘I will give part of this in the way of Allah!’
